Buffalo Bison were originally found in prairie. At present, however, their range is very restricted. The Buffalo Bison is found in national parks of the United States and Canada. Wood Buffalo Bison are more populated than Plains Bison. Earlier, when the population of the Buffalo Bison was larger, the herds traveled long distances in search of food. Species migration was connected with change of food plants. Even today, one can see paths left by millions of Buffalo Bison hooves.

Buffalo Bisons - Feeding Habits

Buffalo Bison are grazing animals. Their feeding behavior is similar to that of domestic stock. The Buffalo Bison feeds on grasses, forbs, and other ground forage. When Buffalo Bison were abundant, they influenced the ecosystem greatly. Their wallows served as temporary water resources for other animals. Dung production they also contributed to creating rich soils of the prairies.

Buffalo Bisons - Social Behavior

Buffalo Bison live in small groups arranged by sex, age, and habitat. Cow groups consist of females, calves, and a few males. During the rut, more male Buffalo Bison join cow groups. In other times, males live either alone and in groups of about 30 species. There is a tendency to develop dominance in groups. Males that are older and have a higher rank, breed more often than the other group members.

Buffalo Bison groups may be seen during grazing and when traveling. They travel in a line. Their behavior is predetermined by habitat conditions and terrain. It should be noted that these animals make good swimmers and runners. Buffalo Bison are capable of developing the speed of about 62 km per hour.
