When Buffalo Bison were still abundant in North America, humans made use of the species' meat and coat. The Buffalo Bison was hunted for food and clothing material. Since Buffalo Bison traveled in huge herds, it was not difficult to hunt them. Large herds were driven into canyons where hunters killed about 50-60 animals at a time.
The Buffalo Bison started to be destroyed extensively with the arrival of the first settlers. The herds were almost devastated to the point of extinction. Since there was no hunting regulation and the herds were easy to hunt, the population of the Buffalo Bison decreased considerably.
The Wood Buffalo Bison suffered the most. By the end of the 19th century, the population of the Wood Buffalo Bison was estimated about 250 species. Despite the fact that the Wood Buffalo Bison National Park helped the species to recover, the population was never reestablished. The Wood Buffalo Bison is now a threatened species.
Besides hunting, habitat loss turned out to be detrimental for the Buffalo Bison. Urban growth and prairie agriculture deprived the Buffalo Bison of necessary habitat. Happily, the population of the Buffalo Bison was saved from extinction. Hunting laws and ranches involved in breeding the Buffalo Bison helped to increase the number of animals. Establishment of parks and reserves also played an important role in Buffalo Bison recovery.
Buffalo Bisons - Producing Livestock
Nowadays, the Buffalo Bison is found in parks and on farms as livestock. Farmers value the species for the fact that it is a native animal of prairies. It is believed that Buffalo Bison are more compatible with local plants and animals than cattle imported from other countries. Buffalo Bison and hybrid animals are raised now for meat.
