Females of these animals are able to breed at the age of 4-5 years. Gestation period lasts 11-12 months. Most births occur in the rainy season when abundant grass improves the nutritional level for the females when they are pregnant or nursing. They usually give birth to one young every two years.

They are the largest land animals of North America. Males and females differ in size considerably. A male animal stands about 2m at the shoulder. The length of the body is from 2.13-3.8 m.; the shoulder hump and a huge head are prominent breed characteristics.
